This portrait of Rudolph Castelhun was done by Christian Görner, an artist from Oakland, California.  The son of Friedrich Karl Castelhun and Lydia Pauline Roetter, Rudolph Castelhun was born on 3 November 1870 and tragically passed away from diphtheria on 22 August 1877 in San Francisco.  In their grief, the family commissioned two portraits of him that were based on an earlier photograph.
